Hello, and welcome to my webpage!
I am Professor of Reading at Heartland Community College, where I've been a member of the faculty since 1996. I've taught developmental reading, academic and life success, and education courses. Prior to that, I served as founding coordinator of Heartland’s tutoring program. My introduction to postsecondary academic support programs and services occurred in 1990, at Illinois State University's Center for Learning Assistance, where I assisted in the management of the Center's operation, including its campus-wide tutoring and Supplemental Instruction programs. My career as an educator began with a fulfilling 5-year stint teaching first- and second-graders.
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from MacMurray College and my Master's degree in Reading from Northern Illinois University. Since completing my Master's, I've continued my professional development by:
- Participating in Read Right® Trainer Training and receiving trainer certification in 2011
- Participating in Read Right® Tutor Training and receiving tutor certification in 2010
- Participating in Reading Recovery® Teacher Training (Sabbatical Leave Project) and receiving initial certification in 2002
- Attending the Kellogg Institute for Developmental Educators in 1995 and completing the requirements for the Developmental Education Specialist Certification in 1996
- Participating in Illinois State University’s Writing Project as a Summer Fellow in 1992
Two honors I am particularly proud of receiving are HCC's National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) 2011 Excellence Award and Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award for 2002.
